After seeing this piece on 60 minutes tonight, it makes complete sense as to why our celebrities are wiling to sacrifice their privacy; because they will do anything to make money. Just like celebrities, our congressmen are willing to neglect our interests and take office in order to make money. Our government is turning into a business, and politicians are willing to sacrifice their "duty" to the people they serve in order to make money.
I think their motives are pretty clear. But as far as we're concerned, why do we just sit on our couch and watch these people who just want our attention so that they make more money? And why do we just allow our elected officials to get away with neglecting our interests?
I think its because we dont realize how these things actually affect our lives. Admittedly, it is very hard to see the effect of one person watching Jersey Shore for an hour. This is the problem. As self-interested humans, we often fail to see how it is in our interest to NOT watch reality television shows. If we want to do something, regardless of the reason, we are going to try to do it, if we find it possible. So while we want there to be more "morally correct" people on the planet, we arent able to make the connection as to how watching reality television is working against that goal. And why dont we see that? Because its easier to just look away and pass the buck. We are all always looking for an easy way out, and when faced with a problem or decision, its human nature to take the easiest possible way. Its all too easy to just watch useless garbage on tv. Its all too easy to just wait until election time to raise questions about your interests. Its all too easy to just follow a sports team that just wants your money and viewership. How do we fix this though? And do we care enough to actually fix this? It starts with learning about our flaws as people, and teaching each other how correct them, starting asap and teaching it to our young. But, having said that, the majority rules, and the majority doesn't care. So step one is convincing them to care.
The biggest thing on TV is money. The producers do not care if the show has no meaning or if it is completely pointless if they can make money. The sad thing is we as the viewers buy into it and watch shows with fights and glamour that have no real meaning other than just something to watch. That is just what they want us to do. They get paid whether people like it or not because if its filled with drama people will watch.

ReplyDeleteOur lives. We search for more considering plenitude and we are just worrying about fufilling then needs. Increasing of interest for entertainment purpose. If the craving elevate tremendously us what would be do next in reality... Have an actual hunger games? The media knows how to want us wanting more!
What causes this need of more more more? Is this a biological drive in the human race? Is it a product of our society?
ReplyDeleteI do agree that many highly looked upon people of our community such as actors and congressmen are only in it for the money. If you are an actor you should take great pride in your work and preparing for your skits. Take example Charlie Shen i think the man is hilarious however his show Two and a Half Men he was only in it for the money. He was on many drugs and drunk all the time which didn't help his acting career and ended up telling off his boss. If he was really passionate about acting he would have done whatever he could to keep acting. But the worst is if our congressmen who we elect are only in it for the money. These people are suppose to be bettering our society and if all they care about is the money then that is not good at all!
ReplyDeleteYou all agree that the producers will put anything on TV without any care to its effect or usefulness. But their is the PBS. They put on concerts form around the world with world name musician, and educational programs such as how the human brain works. There is a reason why you don't tune in to PBS. Its all on you. There are other TV shows like the History and Discovery channel. Its on you that you watch what MTV has showing. There are other chose out there but we dont want to watch them. Its all on the views and we sadly want to watch people get drunk and get into fights.
